TBL believes that reducing congestion is essential in improving air quality and reducing waste. Real-time intelligent traffic management software such as SCOOT has been effectively managing town and city traffic networks since the 1990s and is the backbone of any future development.
To spotlight public transport as an example, attempts to support buses along the network has been restricted to algorithms within those systems which carry out a specific function once a bus is detected at a trigger point. This has recently moved from a physical trigger via underground detection to a virtual GPS trigger point. This has removed the need for expensive on-street equipment though still uses the same algorithms.
Using mobile data, TBL can bring new efficiency to our road network, for all vehicle types and purposes. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence can replace traditional methods of detecting and controlling traffic, especially in respect of public transport, and of emergency vehicles.
Local Authority Local Transport Plans will include the ability to immediately impose a new regime, be it for a road closure, a traffic incident, or even under the Emergency Plan. Revenue budgets will be protected and enhanced under developments for better vehicle priority at intersections, dynamic off-peak road works planning, dynamic allocation for pre-booked on-street parking, and unhindered progression for emergency and other high priority vehicles/convoys.
